For my MSc thesis I am studying the impact of grape-protection nets in vineyards to avian mortality. In order to prevent birds from damaging grapes, many winegrowers use grape-protection nets in their vineyards. Improperly installed nets can cause mortality among wild animals, with birds being primarily affected. Despite widespread use of nets in agricultural landscape, their impact on birds and other biodiversity is poorly understood.

The study was conducted across a network of 42 vineyards within the Cantons of Valais and Vaud, between August and October, in 2023 and 2024. We collected data on (1) the species of birds trapped and (2) the net type and installation conditions. In order to understand how mortality changes through the grape growing season, we monitored a subset of vineyards every 2-3 days. In addition, we placed trail cameras facing new bird mortalities, to know the time required for decomposition or scavenging and to identify scavenger species.

Identifying factors that increase the risk of mortality is essential to implement targeted conservation efforts and minimize bird fatalities in the future. Even rare and endangered species are affected by this hazard. Mitigating the negative effects of protective nets can contribute to wildlife conservation in agricultural settings.
